1846 - Wilberforce, Samuel (1805-1873). A Reproof of the American Church by the Bishop of Oxford, extracted from a "History of the Protestant Episcopal church in America"; With an Introduction by an American Churchman. New York: William Harned. 1846. 8vo. 59pp. Pamphlet removed from bound volume. [44 page introduction and concluding chapter of Bishop Wilberforce's "History"]. No wraps. Leaves generally quite clean, some sporadic light foxing. Few negligible pen marks to title. Bishop Wilberforce's book was was supposed to be reprinted for the American readers by one or two "enterprising publishers" as soon as the book reached American shores. But 12 months elapsed and there was still no sign of an American copy, due in part to "one or more Southern Bishops have exerted their influence." Slavery was the main issue for this suppression. The author of the introduction alleges the negro insurrection and massacre at Southampton, Virginia, 21st August, 1831 as the beginning of a national debate on the subject of Slavery. Appleton's attributes the printing of this pamphlet and the introduction "by an American Churchman" to William Jay (1789 - 1858) second son of John Jay (1745 - 1829) the leading abolitionists of his time. However, the authorship is attributed to Rev. Evan M. Johnson written in pencil on title page. Includes bibliographical references. [Slavery United States] Rare. Very Good. $325
