[c. 1888] - Schereschewsky, Samuel Isaac Joseph, Bishop (1831-1906). The Bible, Prayer book, and terms in our China missions: addressed to the House of Bishops. [Geneva, New York: Humphrey Printer, c. 1888] 8vo. 16pp. Original fragile paper wraps separated, chipped along the edges and in poor condition, both present. Pamphlets original stitching holding firm, quite clean, vertical crease, light soiling to corner edge of p. 10-11. Includes a single folio sheet laid in; folded twice, typed on both sides in English and Chinese (I. Corinthians. VI. VII.) More than likely a sheet from Schereschewsky’s personal papers (p.55-56). Bishop Schereschewsky explains the different versions of Scriptures in the Chinese language; the 3 translations of the Bible in general use (Wen-li & Kwan-wha). Terms for Bishops & Priests, and Missionary Jurisdiction in China. [China-Missions-Prayer book in Chinese-Church Legislation]. Good. $225

A sermon with references to the freedom enjoyed in this newly created country, the need for a strong militia, the recent war in Europe and biblical quotations, etc… Caleb Strong (1745-1819) one of the first U.S. senators [Mass.] in 1789, a believer in a powerful central government and an ardent supporter of Washington’s administration, Caleb Strong was twice Governor of Massachusetts (1800-1807, 1812-1816).
