First Published Report of Railway Construction between Boston & Albany
1827 – Phelps, Abner (1779-1873). Report of the Select Committee of the House of Representatives of Massachusetts on the Practicability and Expediency of Constructing a Railway from Boston to the Hudson River, at or Near Albany...January 19, 1827. Boston : True and Greene, State Printers. 1827. Small 4to. 37, [1]pp. Includes a copy of a letter from De Witt Clinton (1769-1828), dated Albany, 24th Nov. 1826. Sewn unbound, uncut pamphlet as issued. Leaves generally quite clean and bright with some light foxing, including the title page. Bottom edge with small loss of paper (possible gnawing, less than 1/2 inch deep, 2 inch wide). As early as 1808 Phelps had the vision of building a railroad between Boston and Albany, but his suggestion was not acted upon until 1826, when he finally became a member of the house. He formed a committee which included George W. Adams and Emory Washburn (1800-1877) a fellow Williams College graduate. A good deal of the construction was done under Phelps's direct supervision and expense. The construction was finally completed in 1842. Very Good or better. [H. R. No. 13.] $600

Interesting correspondence between The Bishop of Exeter and Mr. Macaulay. In a letter dated Jan.22, 1849, Macaulay writes: “Before another edition of my book appears I shall have time to weigh your observations carefully…”

The Bishop is rather hostile to the Proposed Church Congress scheduled for October of that year, and finds himself in “great pain” to withhold his co-operation and expresses his “strong disapproval…to hold such a meeting at such a time and place”.
