Joseph Hawley
(1682 - 1735), Jonathan Edwards' (1703-1758) cousin, committed suicide during the great
awakening when he was despairing over not experiencing the graces that others
were. Edwards preached an incredibly moving sermon on the occasion of his death
in 1735 entitled "Our weakness, Christ's strength." Nathaniel Edwards who signed
this indenture was not a close relation of Jonathan Edwards... there were two
Edwards lines in the town. However, he was killed by an Indian in 1724, the year
after signing the deed. Henry Dwight was a prominent military captain of his
time... he kept the town in order.
