Internally Fine, clean and bright. A biography of Hoover released the year before his successful bid as the 31st President of the United States. "From the National Cyclopedia of American Biography". 1870 - Herbert, Charles. A Reply to the Pamphlet of the Rev. W. G. Clark...Entitled The Dangers of the Church of England. London and Cambridge: Macmillan & Co. 1870. [First Edition] 8vo. 29pp. Inscribed and dedicated by author: "The Rt. Revd Bishop Eastburn, with kindest regards. Nov 21/70". Pamphlet with three vertical creases, some to top edge, rear wrap soiled. A reply to Mr. Clark's "proposal for the removal of the indelibility of orders", [Clerical Disabilities act of 1870], and other statements in his recently published pamphlet. The two men were acquaintances: "I am not wholly unknown to you. I placed a dear son under your charge...and for myself I am a member of the same University [Trinity College, Cambridge]". This pamphlet was delivered the year Horne obtained a benefice in London and a prebend in St. Paul's, and is a affirmation of his views on the Church. Library number to top margin of title, small stain to foredge. Printers ink to p. 8 a little weak. Exceptionally Rare. A treatise of "spiritualism." Discusses the authors view on the history of supernatural phenomena, sorcery and witchcraft, along with Christian spirit-mediums. Includes his personal experiences, the "Rochester-Knockings," dark seances, possessions etc,.
