Generally quite clean, last two leaves lightly foxed. The anonymous author offers a "faithful comparison, side by side, of the two systems." New York: Printed at the Protestant Episcopal Press. 1831. 8vo. 42pp. Two states noted. One has 42 p. The other has "Corrections." printed on p. [43]. This copy is the first state, with 42 p. only. Contemporary 1/2 brown morocco gilt lettered spine over marbled boards lightly rubbed, spine sunned. Leather cracked at front hinge, boards holding strong. Contemporary ownership inscription to top margin of title: "Jas. W. Ingraham?". Small Episcopal Divinity School "Rare Book" plate to bottom of rear pastedown, otherwise unmarked. Leaves with light sporadic foxing, some minor damp-staining to lower margins of prelims. About 40 or so blank leaves bound at end to thicken binding. Good or better. Amer. imprints 8875. $150

[First Edition] 8vo. 56pp. Original printed brown wraps with a few chips to edges and corners. Internally Fine or close to it, clean and bright. This report includes personal observations (by Alonzo Potter) on their work in Military and Church Hospitals, Bible Classes, Sewing Schools, etc. Of great interest is the Appendix p. [30]-56. Which includes reports by the female workers themselves, signed [in print] by their initials only. These reports contain mainly their experiences with the young men they cared for. Two issues with gift inscriptions to verso of title from: Perry, William Stevens (1832-1898), and Southgate, William S. (William Scott), 1831-1899.
Contains: Announcing the “earnest desire …by some of the American residents in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to have the Services of a Minister of the Episcopal Church.” “[that] a considerable sum would be guaranteed…[for] the Spanish Roman Catholic youth to inquire into the Religion and customs of the American people, who so utterly surpass them in all the arts of life, and are winning from them their native soil.”! Also; the board will “afford assistance to the new Missionary Stations, especially in Kansas, Nebraska, Oregon and California, where the expenses of living require very large appropriations for the support of missionaries.”, “separation of Kansas and Nebraska from the Missionary jurisdiction of the Bishop of the North-West”. Grover Cleveland Bergdoll (1893-1966), American race car driver, pilot, and heir to the Bergdoll and Sons Brewing Co. Was the most famous American draft dodger during World War I. He was convicted, captured and imprisoned for 7 years, Bergdoll was eventually released in 1946. [House Resolution 12, Sixty-seventh Congress, 1st Session]. $45

1832 - An Examination of Mr. Howell's Review of Dr. Ducachet's Letter on "The Office of Sponsors in Baptism:" In a Letter to the Reviewer, From an Episcopalian. [6 lines from Hooker's Ecclesiastical Polity] Printed by T. G. Broughton. 1832. [Norfolk, VA]. 8vo. 55pp. Errata to rear. Pamphlet removed from a bound volume. No wraps. Contemporary ownership inscription of [Rev.] C[harles] Mason (1812 - 1862) to top of title page. Leaves quite clean and bright, some light foxing to a few, including title. A forceful and convincing rebuttal of Rev. Howell's negative review of Dr. Ducachet's recent publication. Howell however was not impressed by this rebuttal and 20 years later published: "Evils of infant baptism", Charleston, 1852. Both men were working and residing in Norfolk, Virginia at the time.
