14 Issues

1835-39 Clarke, James Freeman (1810-1888), Osgood, Samuel (1812-1880), etc. The Western Messenger Devoted to Religion and Literature. Louisville, Ky.: Western Unitarian Association. [1835-39] 8vo. One of the most influential periodicals printed in the West. 14 issues, all in original paper wraps, generally in very good condition. Two issues (Vol. VII. No. IV. – V.) are both lacking rear wraps with a few marginal notes probably in Thomas Maylin's hand. These two issues are slightly taller, with green wraps, published in Cincinnati. Vol. VII. No. V. with a hole to top corner margin going through the journal with no loss of text. Leaves clean with some negligible sporadic foxing.

Association copies with ink inscriptions to top margins of front wraps: Jos.[eph] Peabody (1757 - 1844), Hon. Stephen C. Phillips (Stephen Clarendon), 1801-1857. and Thomas Maylin. Contains: Osgood's 9 page review of Emerson's first published work "Nature": "The author is not such a dreamer on the beauties of the universe, as to forget its material uses. Leaves fresh and clean, lightly toned with a few spots of foxing to margins. Text embellished with several fine headpieces and illuminated initials. In the dedication the author goes to great length asking Charles Earl of Peterborough for his blessing and protection. The pamphlet is a condemnation of the clergy, calling instead the Parliament to be the true Church of the land.

Collection of Four Uncommon Reprinted Pamphlets Bound Together, 3/4 calf over marbled boards lightly rubbed with minor scrapes to spine. Episcopal stamp to first title and first leaf of text, library plate to front pastedown, paper label to spine. Extra title leaf for first pamphlet bound in. Last pamphlet with silverfish damage to top corners of leaves (no loss of text). Leaves clean and bright. No half-titles or wraps. 8vo.

P. 67 with 4 inch tear to lower margin (no loss of text). Very Good. A collection of letters first published separately in the Churchman collected here including an appendix. Coxe a conservative bishop was enraged when he found out that father Grafton had lectured students at the Seminary in New York. He was opposed to Grafton’s views on the Eucharist. Grafton denied any such lecture and said a student had asked him a question and whist responding other students came to his room to listen. Seymour was apparently unaware of the so called lecture at the time. $50
