Rare first appearance of Thanatopsis by William Cullen Bryant; greatest masterpiece of Early American poetry.

1815 – 1826

North American Review & Miscellaneous Journal

23 volumes, I-XXIII, containing 52 consecutive issues [No. 1-52], for  1815 – 1826

The oldest literary magazine in the United States was founded in 1815 by William Tudor; the first issue appeared in May of that year. The first 4 volumes of the "The North American Review" are almost entirely the work of William Tudor. In the "Editorial Note" at the end of vol. IV Tudor thanks those "persons whose good will has been shown in support of the work, hopes they will still continue it [as] the responsibility of the present Editor ceases." He goes on to remind his readers that: "This journal is not subservient to any sect religious or political. Its main object is the encouragement of American Literature."
